MICA Competitive Scholarship 2016

This is a collection of my strongest work from my first semester at MICA.
Alter Ego

This piece was a collaboration with Madison Trotman '19. We decided for our final in drawing to put together two ideas that we had worked on during our first semester in drawing. My bubbles were to complement her figures. A version of this piece was selected to be hung in the Foundation show at the end of the year.

You're weighing me down

This piece was a performance/ skin project. I wanted to use nylon-like material and shiny material to make a statement on gender and how gender norms are pushed on to us from day one.

My mother's wisdom
3'x5'

This is a final piece to a longer study on an image of a cactus. It reflects on home and my mother's logic, "if i can keep a cactus alive, i should be able to keep my self alive." This also served as an installation piece, where the audience is encouraged to put pins into the plush part and think of home as they do so.

Moments between the seconds

This project was a reflection on the prompt "love on the edge" and the inspiration of the poem "Black Marigolds". The black male figure represents the poet who is madly in love with the female form and wishes to bring her back into his "soul".  They are both floating because for me "love on the edge" is the feeling that the ground is ripped out from under you, you're weightless, and not sure If you are floating or falling.
